Colombian presidential hopeful gets shot in skull
The 39-year-old lawmaker, affiliated with the right-wing Democratic Center party, was meeting supporters around 5 p.m. local time when the attack occurred, according to a party statement. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, and authorities arrested one suspect at the scene.
The Democratic Center condemned the attack on their senator, calling it politically motivated.
President Gustavo Petro condemned the shooting and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, referring to them as the “scum of humanity.” He expressed his condolences to Uribe’s family on social media.
Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia also condemned the violence, hoping for Uribe’s recovery and safety.
Uribe, who declared his bid for the 2026 presidency earlier this year, has been a strong critic of the current government. The shooting represents one of the most severe attacks on a political figure in Colombia in decades, with no similar assassination attempts occurring since the violent era of drug lord Pablo Escobar in the early 1990s.
