Uribe Criticizes Colombia’s Security Policies
"While Miguel Uribe fights for his life, the government seems preoccupied with other matters. They propose agreements to prevent new massacres, yet international intelligence has informed me of another assassination plot against me,” Uribe declared on X this Monday.
His remarks reflect growing frustration with the government’s perceived inaction in the face of escalating threats.
The senator, who is also a contender for the presidency, remains in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head at close range during a campaign event in Bogotá over the weekend.
The 39-year-old right-wing politician underwent emergency brain surgery but has shown limited responsiveness to medical intervention.
Following the attack, authorities apprehended a 15-year-old individual at the scene.
The suspect, who is recovering from an injury to the leg, has raised concerns about the increasing involvement of minors in political violence and the broader implications for national stability.
In response to the incident, Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez revealed that a substantial reward of 3 billion pesos (around USD730,000) will be offered for any credible information that aids in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the assault.
"Security measures have been heightened to the maximum level. A reward will be given to those who provide accurate and timely information that enables us to recognize and neutralize any threat to our political leaders in advance," he stated.
This announcement underscores the growing anxiety surrounding political safety in Colombia as tensions rise.
